Zouave “Ball” Buttons – Fredericksburg, Virginia – Civil War – 5653

Description: Seven original “Ball” buttons worn by Zouave Regiments on both sides excavated on the 1862 – 1864 battlefields near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The first Zouave regiment in the Civil War, the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry or Hawkin’s Zouaves, was mustered in on April 23, 1861. Other cities and states in the North and the South also saw the creation of Zouave units. One French language newspaper commented “Ils pleut des Zouaves” (It is raining Zouaves) because there were so many of the units formed in 1861. There were Zouaves present at every major Civil War battle from First Manassas or First Bull Run to Appomattox. In 1861 one of the United States Zouave Cadets described their uniform as: A bright red chasseur cap with gold braid; light blue shirt with moire antique facings; dark blue jacket with orange and red trimmings; brass bell buttons, placed as close together as possible; a red sash and loose red trousers; russet leather leggings, buttoned over the trousers, reaching from ankle halfway to knee; and white waistbelt. Fredericksburg, located on the Rappahannock River, was part of the 1862 – 1863 Confederate defense line protecting the Capital at Richmond. Starting with the Battle of Fredericksburg in December of 1862, the Battles of Chancellorsville (1863), Spotsylvania and “The Wilderness” (1864) were fought nearby. NOTE; the image of the Pennsylvania Zouave is a contemporary reprint of the original; courtesy of the Library of Congress. The artifacts come in a 5” x 6” riker mount box as shown. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid to open. Copies of the paperwork shown will come with the certificate. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
