St Bernadine of Siena was an Italian priest and Franciscan missionary who was known for his great preaching, which was often directed against Satanism and witchcraft, infanticide, usury, gambling and sodomy; even blasphemy and indecent conversation. His preaching style was such that crowds gathered to hear him; he used popular imagery and creative language and used Biblical themes that mattered to the everyday lives of his listeners. Most of his audience were women, and he stuck up for them in subtle ways, for example cautioning young women to avoid suitors too interested in their dowries; admonishing young men to emulate St Joseph as their wives were expected to be like Mary; and he warned about sexual abuse in marriage. During a plague he and 10 companions took care of a hospital and its patients by themselves when everyone else abandoned them. He supported small businesses and entrepreneurs, recognizing their importance to self-respect and employment; and encouraged the theory of a "just wage" based upon the skill or talent of each worker.
