Description: Rare and exceptional Miriam Haskell suite consisting of faux pearl and gilt metal grape brooch and matching screw clip-on earrings. Intricately designed and constructed by hand by Frank Hess, master designer for Haskell. The brooch measures approximately 2 1/2" long by 1 3/4" wide. The earrings measure 1 1/4" long by 1" wide. In very good - excellent condition, particularly for its age. Purchased as estate jewelry and in excellent condition and doesn't look worn. Please see amazing provenance below. INTERESTING PROVENANCE: This set was purchased at an antique store in New York. The purchase included many pieces of Miriam Haskell jewelry including this rare, lovely rhinestone suite. The woman who owned this jewelry was 100, but used to work in the jewelry department at high end retailer Addis Company Department Store in Syracuse, New York and possibly other high end department stores in Syracuse as well. After 63 years as one of downtown Syracuse's top retail destinations, Addis closed in 1992, three years after they merged with the Dey Brothers Department Store. HISTORY: Miriam Haskell Story: Frank Hess (1926 - 1960): When collectors think of Miriam Haskell they immediately think of Frank Hess. He was with Haskell virtually from the beginning and stayed until 1960. He was responsible for the Signature Look which involved heavily beaded, intricate designs. He loved to layer pieces and didn’t leave any visible metal structure. His pieces were often asymmetric.Most of Miriam Haskell's work was handmade from imported glass beads and crystal—after European costume jewelry. The idea wasn’t to imitate the real but to create fanciful fakes inspired by nature and exotic cultures, a novel concept at the time. Miriam Haskell jewelry competed with the French - Chanel and Schiaparelli. Her collections are marked by a metal filigree covered with clusters of beads and glass pearls - it is largely owed to Frank Hess, the label’s designer from 1926 to 1960.
