Description: Up for sale is a map titled "ISOTHERMAL CHART Of The Region North of the 36th Parallel & Between the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans", Compiled under the DIrection of ISAAC I. STEVENS, Gov. of Washington Territory. The map was created for the expedition of the American West for the Pacific Railroad Surveys. It was printed by the New York lithographic company of Sarony, Major and Knapp employing multiple printings in both tones and colors between 1853 and 1855. Explorations and Surveys for a rail road from the Misssippi River to the Pacifi Ocean by the War Department. This map was removed from the following book: House of Representatives - 36th Congress, 1st Session - REPORTS OF EXPLORATIONS AND SURVEYS, to Ascertain The Most Practicable and Economical Route For a Railroad From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean. Made under the direction of the Secretary of War, in 1853-5, According to Acts of Congress of March 3, 1853, May 31, 1854, and August 5, 1854. VOLUME XII - Book I. This volume was part of the northernmost survey, commanded by Isaac I. Stevens, which explored the terrain along the 47th parallel, from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast. The lithographs created from these surveys were published in twelve large volumes between 1855 and 1860 by the War Department. This map measures approximately 29" x 16", including the border area. It is blank of the reverse side. It is generally in Fair Condition. It has some wear and browning, as well as some foxing - some of which affects the actual map. The map also has a lot of creases in it, particuarly in the bottom left side. A piece of the border is missing in the bottom left corner and there is a three inch tear here, as well. Two round tears along the top edge of the map. Some creases from when it was originally folded within the Report. Some nicks, and tears and other creases along the edges. There is also a piece of tape on the back of the map along the tear on the left edge. This map is a great piece of American history that will look VERY NICE when framed! Please note that while I have included pictures of the "Title Page" and the "Letter to the Secretary of War" page from the book that this map was taken from, they are NOT included in the sale, as they are reference pieces to determine authenticity for other lithographs. I would be happy to include a copy if requested, but this sale is for the 1 page map ONLY. Other dings here and there. Please see my store for other great items. Inventory R-36
