Gorham Sterling Porringer 1886 Historically Significant US Navy Captain

Description: Rare and Historic 19th c. Gorham Sterling Silver Porringer, with acanthus form handle. Bears the date stamp for 1886 and is engraved for presentation as March 31st 1887. "Greer Assheton Duncan, March 31st 1887 from his Godmother Helen F. Cope" Porringer Measures 1 1/2" high, 6 3/4" wide, 4 1/2" diam., 5.0 Sterling ozt. United States Naval Captain (O-6) Greer A. Duncan rose from the ranks of Ensign (O-1) after the Naval Academy and an Advanced Degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic in Engineering. Captain Duncan saw some of the most harrowing combat engagements and periods of war forming our country in the first half of the 20th century. While deployed with the Marines aboard a Marine Expeditionary unit three different times he stood with Marines in Cuba, Haiti, and World War I. Additionally, His dedication to service saw him answer the call to the European Theatre of War during WWII.
