Description: Cyc. cooperi ( F2 ) (' Magestic' x ' Cascade') Cycnoches (abbreviated Cyc.) cooperi is one of my favorite species of this genus. This population is a sibling cross of two magnificent clones. The clone ‘Majestic’ is the result of Cyc. cooperi 'SVO' FCC/AOS x Cyc. cooperi 'Mem. Pat Worthington' AM/AOS. I was in the room when both Cyc. cooperi were awarded in the AOS Pacific South Judging Center. In my opinion, the plant Cyc. cooperi 'Mem. Pat Worthington' AM/AOS would have garnered an FCC or better if it had a couple flowers more. The clone ‘Cascade’ had over 36 very richly-colored flowers on one 27.5-inch (70 cm) inflorescence at the time of award. This marvelous species is found in northern Peru and Brazil as a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte in wet montane forests at elevations of 400 to 800 meters. It has cigar-shaped cylindrical pseudobulbs. It blooms in the summer on a long pendant inflorescence carrying several showy, fleshy, chocolate-scented flowers arising from near the apex of the newly matured, leafy pseudobulb. Grow these plants in Cattleya conditions, i.e., bright indirect light with high humidity, warm conditions, and good air circulation. Water and fertilize regularly during the growing season. This family of orchids will go through a period of dormancy after it blooms. It is normal for the leaves to turn yellow and drop after blooming. At such time reduce watering to twice a month, just enough to keep the pseudobulbs from shriveling. Resume regular watering and fertilizing when new growths are at least 3 inches tall. Plants can die easily from over watering as they emerge from dormancy. Female flowers will often be produced when given high light and low moisture. Showier male flowers will be produced under shadier conditions with higher moisture. If you like deep, richly colored form of Cyc. cooperi with an abundance of flowers then this strain is for you. I would grow this just for the chocolate fragrance alone. Award quality. Highly Recommended. GuaranteeSafe arrival of a healthy orchid plant is guaranteed.
