Description: For sale is a very rare DATED antique primitive wrought iron grease lamp early lighting device. Grease lamps are some of the earliest forms of lighting used. Wrought iron lamps like this are consistent with 17th and 18th century construction. Near the base of the lamp on the four-sided iron stock, there is stamped/scratched date of 1685. There is one number on each side. Please look at the photos carefully to see it. The grease plate with wick channels is adjustable in height by a primitive metal spring. And the top hook would have the purpose of hanging the lamp. This item is very stable with secure wrought iron connections. It sits well on a flat surface without wobbles. It would be a great item to add to your collection of antique wrought iron/ early lighting devices. This item was acquired from a reputable New England Auction house. 20" tall and 6" base spread.
