BUDAPEST HUNGARY CONFERENCE AUG. 1911 REPORT by J. DUNCAN - RARE

Description: We are offering the RARE book Budapest Hungary Conference August 1911. Report of the American Federation of Labor Representative [James Duncan] at the Budapest, Hungary International Trades Convention. Aug. 10-12, 1911. [This report was made to the] Atlanta, Ga., A. F. of L. Convention, November 1911. Compliments of James Duncan, Quincy, Mass. (6" x 9"; 34 pages) The report was made by James Duncan, the American A. F. of L. representative who attended the conference that hosted 27 delegates representing 18 countries. The report contains 23 plates of photographic prints of Budapest, and the other cities James Duncan visited in Europe. One picture is of the Pit-Brow girls who worked at British coal mines [look them up - very interesting]. There are pictures of Hungarian peasants and Hod Carriers (women carrying a "hod" filled with bricks to a building site); a picture of the delegates; and one of Randy MacDonald [Secretary of Labor Committee who later became the first Independent Labour Party Prime Minister of Great Britian] with his family. The report is filled with so much information and interesting details of the social, political and working situations that existed throughout Europe at that time, so much so that we can only touch on a little bit of it. Duncan traveled from America by ship to Liverpool, England where upon his arrival he observed a spirit of unrest among trade unionists, especially along the waterfront, but which existed throughout all of Great Britain. He then traveled across Europe spending time in Paris, Berlin, Vienna and finally in Budapest where he attended the convention. In Paris, Duncan writes that the city is certainly "Gay Paree" as the saying went, a city of fun and good times, but he shows another side of the city. He writes about the France's "disregard for the condition of poor working women"; and of the Parisian's "cruelty to horses", saying that the whip is in constant use, as evidenced by the welts on the horses. "If the French Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals would act, the Houses of Correction would overflow, and boulevard cab drivers would be conspicuous by their absence from public thoroughfares". In Berlin & Vienna, he found similar situations - he writes that the beauty and magnificence of these cities, on the one hand, is equaled by the depths of misery on the other hand. Pages 9 to 23 cover the conference itself, including discussions between the delegates from the different countries, offering information on their own particular situations and ways of dealing with them. The last 10 pages are devoted to the country of Hungary, in general. **CONDITION** - Pages are Excellent. The photographic prints are also Excellent, a few have some brown spotting (foxing) in the borders, but the images are excellent. The covers have some soiling & tearing (see images).
