Description: The original column was started in 1806 at Napoleon's direction and completed in 1810. It was modelled after Trajan's Column, to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz; its veneer of 425 spiraling bas-relief bronze plates that were made out of 180 cannon actually captured by the Grand Armee of France in the battle of Austerlitz. The monument is a bronze copy of Trajan’s famous victory column that also still stands today in Rome. The monument began with Napoleon on top dressed as a Roman Emperor and later replaced with a statue of him in modern military garb, and still later the whole thing was moved and he came back sporting the more allegorical toga look of the original statue. Over time the Column has been attacked multiple times, then dismantled, and finally restored in the Place Vendome. As one of Paris many icons it has always been a popular tourist destination. This one is dated circa 1848 by the modern dress of the Emperor. The casting is crisp and highly detailed. It is 10.75” tall including its 4.25” square slate base. The condition is above average and like so many of them; it is missing the fence originally surrounding the base. Please look carefully at the pictures and request additional pictures or specific information if needed. The overall condition is rather good considering it is pushing 200 years old. Please use the pictures as the best description of condition. Questions are always welcome. Shipping is by USPS Priority Mail to the lower 48 and combined shipping is always an option.
