Here is a beautiful piece of Ammolite, from the late Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago. From the Korite Ammolite Mine, Bearpaw Formation in Southern Alberta, Canada. It measures about 45 mm. at its widest. Made from the shells of extinct ammonites, in 1981, ammolite was given official gemstone status by the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO).We call this Bright Deep Cherry Red, about as "cherry" as we have ever seen. Please enlarge the photos and decide for yourself. Rarer than purple ammolite. The colors are gorgeous. Different colors can sometimes be seen at different angles, and with light at different angles, like the flash of labradorite. A loupe makes it easier to see some of the colors. We used 3 high-grade white lights (95% perfect white) when photographing this, the differences are in angle and amount of light, and angle of the specimen. We invite you to visit our store.
