Emerson Family Dowd Chatham County North Carolina Antique Letters Lot – 30 Letters (1830-1856) Included in this collection is a series of letters from the Emerson and Dowd Families in Chatham County, North Carolina. Years range from 1830 to 1856. Many of the letters are from Rosanna D. Emerson to her son Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Emerson (1835-1918), who was attending Wake Forest College for some of this period of time. Rev. Dr. Andrew Jackson Emerson would later become a Baptist minister and was the first President of Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas in 1890. He also served as a chaplain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Letters are full of family and local history. Handwritten Letter to “Rosanna D. Dowd” of Chatham County, North Carolina (name is written on the back side of the letter). It appears to be dated 1830. There is heavy tearing, curling and creasing to the top edge of the paper, and tearing along the folds. Letter is from “Cousin Cherry D.,” which is signed at the bottom of the fourth page. 4 Pages (fourth page is partial). Measures approximately 7 ¾” x 12 ¾”. Handwritten Letter to “My Dear Cousin,” dated October 1831 from Moore County and addressed to “Rosanna D. Dowd” in Chatham County, North Carolina. It also states, “Attention of Mr. Phillips.” Letter is from Cherry Dowd. 3 Pages and a partial handwritten page. Measures approximately 7 ¾” x 12 ½”. Handwritten Letter to “My Ever Dear Cousin,” dated 1832. It appears to read, “Sandridge” along the top of the front side. The letter is addressed to Rosanna D. Dowd in Chatham County, North Carolina. On the back side, it mentions Cherry Dowd of Moore County, NC. The letter is also signed by Cherry Dowd. 3 Pages. Measures approximately 7 5/8” x 12 ¼”. Handwritten Letter to “Dear Cousin,” dated 1832. It is addressed to “Rosanna D. Dowd, Chatham County, NC” on the reverse side. At the top of the third page, it is signed “Nancy Dalrymple.” The last name may be spelled incorrectly. 3 Pages (third page is just writing at the top of the page). Measures approximately 7 7/8” x 12 5/8”. Handwritten Letter to “Dear Cousin,” dated 1832. It is addressed to “Rosanna Dowd, Chatham County” on the reverse side. On the third page, it is signed, “[first initial may be a “T” or “L,” Dalrymple.” 3 Pages (third page is partial). Measures approximately 6 ¼” x 8”. Handwritten Letter to “My Very Dear Cousin,” dated possibly January 1837, and addressed to “Mrs. Rosanna D. (or L) Emerson, Chatham County, NC on the back side of the document. It is from Cherry G. Dowd. 3 Handwritten Pages. Measures approximately 6 ½” x 8 1/8”. Handwritten Letter to “My Dear Son,” appears to be dated August 18, 1851. Letter is not addressed to anyone beyond that, but does mention Wake Forest College on the second page. It is signed “R.D. Emerson” at the bottom of the second page. 2 Pages (front/back). Measures approximately 7 ¾” x 12 ¼”. Handwritten Letter to “Dear Son,” appears to be dated February 9, 1852. Letter is not addressed any further than that. It is signed “Rosanna D. It is addressed to “A.J. Emerson” on the back side. It is signed by “R.D. Emerson” on the bottom of the first page. 1 Page. Measures approximately 7 5/8” x 9 ¾”. Handwritten Letter to “Dear Son,” appears to be dated July 29, 1856. It is not addressed any further than that. On the back side, it is signed “Your affectionate father, A. Emerson.” The top part of the letter appears to have been cut. Letter mentions the death of his mother, Rosanna D. Emerson. 2 Pages (front/back) (back side is only partially written). Measures approximately 7 ¾” x 7 ¾”.These documents are in antique condition. There are folds, tearing at the folds, holes, missing segments of letters, staining, discoloration, edge tearing, creasing, marks and other wear. Tearing, staining and creasing are heavy. Some letters have curling to the edges, turned corners, and a wavy appearance and feel (perhaps having gotten wet). Some pages have been cut. Pages have a heavy old paper storage-type scent. The 1830 letter has considerable tearing, curling, and staining. It has also been repaired by tape in some areas of the tearing.
