Description: Aizu Nuri Orchid Lacquered Music jewelry Box Dimensions: 33.5 cm x 10.5 cm x 24 cm The first lacquered products in the Aizu region began to be created in the second half of the 16th century during the reign of the Ashina clan. In 1590, the new ruler, Christian Gamo Ujisato, brought from his homeland, the province of Omi, a wood craftsman and a lacquer master, who laid the foundations of the local craft of lacquering wooden products. During the Edo period (1603-1867), the Aizu government in every possible way contributed to the development of this craft, using lacquered products as its international product, which was exported to the then administrative and political center - Edo and abroad - to Holland. Using a 17th-century lacquer technique, Aizu was combined with maki-e decorative painting: wooden pieces were shallowly carved with a pattern, the grooves were fixed with gold or silver powder, and then covered with urushi lacquer.
