Open the anvil up slightly, place the chain in and slowly tighten the anvil until is pinches the link - so the drive link (above) is caught by BOTH sides of the anvil - as much as possible when you center the press to break the chain. If BOTH SIDES are not caught by the shoulder of the anvil it can push the chain down INTO the anvil and you wont break it. Here is a trick - when breaking the chain, CENTER the punch, then use your BODY to crack the chain using very little movement What I mean is use your chest to push hard till the chain breaks, and STOP the lever.
