Description: William Purcell Born at Fort Covington, Franklin County, New York. August 15th, 1830. Died at Rochester, New York. December 27th, 1905. In Memoriam NP [Rochester, NY?]: Privately Printed 1905 First Edition Inscription on the front free endpaper, possibly written by William Purcell’s widow, Ellen Purcell. Small quarto, unpaginated, publisher' original gilt lettered black cloth covered boards. All edges gitl. Formerly from an institutional library. Some rubbing and wear, else in good + condition. William Purcell (1830–1905) was a prominent figure in Rochester, New York, known for his influential role as the long-time editor and publisher of the Rochester Union and Advertiser. For over 40 years, he guided the newspaper, which became a vital voice for the Democratic Party in the region. Through his editorials, Purcell advocated for workers' rights, supported Democratic policies, and shaped public opinion on key political issues of the day. Beyond journalism, he was actively involved in local politics and civic life, contributing to the development of Rochester's community. His legacy as a journalist and public servant was one of dedication to the causes he believed in and to the betterment of his city. Purcell passed away in 1905, leaving behind a lasting imprint on the media and political landscape of Rochester.
